The story of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples is one of the most well-known accounts in the Gospels. It is recorded in John 13 and is commonly taught as a lesson on humility. Indeed, it beautifully demonstrates the humility of Christ, who willingly took the place of the lowest servant and washed the feet of His own disciples. Some churches even practice foot washing today as a literal ordinance, while others emphasize its spiritual significance.<figure id="figure-qvhvaw418msiaqto5"><img id="qvhvaw418msiaqto5" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/2fM1M9UeoZleMvEAKaHvmGP8FLfYaYftjwYfN2w4Re4HJjeEciuzJQH9OA57mEbo.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 3/2; object-position: undefined% 20%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="3:2" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined%" data-positiony="20%" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/2fM1M9UeoZleMvEAKaHvmGP8FLfYaYftjwYfN2w4Re4HJjeEciuzJQH9OA57mEbo.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 3/2; object-position: undefined% 20%;"></figure>However, I believe there is a much deeper message hidden within this story.Throughout this blog we have repeatedly shown that the central message of the entire Bible is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, through which God restores mankind into fellowship and intimacy with Himself. I believe John 13 is not merely a lesson in humility—it is a living picture of the entire mission of Jesus Christ.John could have simply written that Jesus washed the disciples' feet. Instead, he carefully records every movement Jesus makes. He tells us that Jesus rose, laid aside His garments, girded Himself with a towel, poured water into a basin, washed His disciples' feet, took His garments again, and sat down.Why does John describe every one of these actions so carefully? I believe these actions beautifully mirror the redemptive mission of Christ.<h3>Jesus Rose and Laid Aside His Garments</h3>John 13:3–4 'Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments...'<figure id="figure-bz6mdjii2pmsiataol"><img id="bz6mdjii2pmsiataol" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/19RGmEenZrpVbPNXtmv7BJEJLiHCgNo6RrIfMxrkySOnyPIDa5NIGwTajGtk6QsZ.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 3/2; object-position: 5% 30%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="3:2" data-caption="" data-positionx="5%" data-positiony="30%" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/19RGmEenZrpVbPNXtmv7BJEJLiHCgNo6RrIfMxrkySOnyPIDa5NIGwTajGtk6QsZ.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 3/2; object-position: 5% 30%;"></figure>Before describing the foot washing, John reminds us that Jesus knew He had come from the Father and was returning to the Father. Throughout Scripture, garments often represent glory, honor, authority, righteousness, and identity. Jesus laying aside His outer garment beautifully reflects what Paul describes in Philippians 2. Jesus did not cease to be God. Rather, He voluntarily laid aside the visible privileges and glory of heaven and humbled Himself by taking on human nature.Philippians 2:6–7 teaches that although Christ was in very nature God, He took the nature of a servant. Colossians 2:9 reminds us that in Christ all the fullness of Deity dwells bodily. Colossians 1:16–17 declares that all things were created through Him and for Him. The Creator willingly entered His own creation.<h3>Jesus Girded Himself with a Towel</h3>John records that Jesus took a towel and girded Himself. In Jewish culture, washing another person's feet was one of the lowest acts of service, usually performed by the lowest household servant or slave. Yet Jesus willingly embraced that role.This beautifully reflects Philippians 2:7—'taking the very nature of a servant.' Isaiah 53:2–3 foretold that the Messiah would come without worldly splendor. The glorious Creator clothed Himself with humanity and came as a servant.<h3>Jesus Poured Water and Washed Their Feet</h3><figure id="figure-g6vzm232enmsibkzhh"><img id="g6vzm232enmsibkzhh" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/37Dz3JQZcZ28eRUGMnywAu7evE7BqoaxpQKLtTWzEXHEWtfFlhcJRPLeEckYfLoJ.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 3/2; object-position: 35% 30%;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="3:2" data-caption="" data-positionx="35%" data-positiony="30%" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/37Dz3JQZcZ28eRUGMnywAu7evE7BqoaxpQKLtTWzEXHEWtfFlhcJRPLeEckYfLoJ.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 3/2; object-position: 35% 30%;"></figure>John 13:5 tells us that Jesus poured water into a basin and began washing the disciples' feet.Throughout Scripture, water frequently symbolizes cleansing and is often associated with the work of the Holy Spirit. Ezekiel 36:25–27 promises that God Himself will cleanse His people and put His Spirit within them.When Peter objected, Jesus answered, 'Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.' Jesus did not tell Peter to wash himself. He insisted that He must be the One who washes him. This is the Gospel. We cannot cleanse ourselves.1 Corinthians 6:11 says believers are washed, sanctified, and justified by the Spirit of God. Titus 3:5 speaks of the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit. The redemption accomplished by Christ is applied to believers through the work of the Holy Spirit.<h3>Jesus Took His Garments Again and Sat Down</h3>After washing their feet, Jesus took His garments again and sat down. John did not need to mention this detail, yet he does.Just as laying aside His garments mirrors Christ's humiliation, taking His garments again points to His exaltation after completing redemption. Hebrews 1:3 declares that after providing purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. Jesus replied, 'Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.'This is not merely the point of John 13—it is the point of the Gospel. Humanity cannot restore itself to God. The eternal Son came from heaven, humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, died for our sins, rose again, and now cleanses His people through the work of the Holy Spirit.Perhaps John 13 is more than a lesson on humility. Perhaps, before going to the cross, Jesus quietly acted out the story of redemption before the eyes of His disciples.Finally, it is important to note that it was Jesus' own decision to come down from heaven. It was His decision to lay aside the glory and privileges of heaven and humble Himself for our sake. It was Jesus who washes us through the work of the Holy Spirit.Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit is our seal (Ephesians 1:13–14). The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Godhead, fully God and equal in essence with the Father and the Son.The disciples played no role in the act of foot washing. Their only response was to receive what Jesus chose to do for them. Peter initially exercised his free will by refusing Jesus, but Jesus insisted, saying, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me." Peter ultimately submitted and allowed Jesus to wash him.This goes to the heart of the discussion surrounding eternal security and whether a believer can lose his or her salvation. It also speaks directly to the relationship between works and grace. Salvation is God's work from beginning to end. We are saved by His grace, and through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit we are continually transformed into the image of Christ. Our responsibility is not to earn our salvation but to believe in the One whom God has sent and to trust the work that He alone has accomplished on our behalf.I pray that we continually get more revelation on the dept of Jesus' love for us.&nbsp;

Jesus Acted Out the Gospel

One of the most famous quotes in Scripture is: “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:17). <figure id="figure-u7w6v7r9nnmq85k7a8"><img id="u7w6v7r9nnmq85k7a8" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/14odrsqC04dnib1a3g3yLUM3Mhh2Ds6ivouKJ6gGzMbpngFTsbGBe1dwg1jqjDP5.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/14odrsqC04dnib1a3g3yLUM3Mhh2Ds6ivouKJ6gGzMbpngFTsbGBe1dwg1jqjDP5.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>This statement was written by James, one of the leaders of the early church. Much evidence points to the fact that this is James, the brother of Jesus. He was Jewish and presided over the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15 (we wrote about this <a data-mce-href="https://christuncensored.net/blog/acts-15--when-grace-was-put-on-trial" href="https://christuncensored.net/blog/acts-15--when-grace-was-put-on-trial">here</a>). His words and teachings carry significant weight. His teachings are often compared to those of Paul and Peter.As students of the Word, our job is to weigh every text of the Bible against the overall theme of Scripture and the character of God. The character of God is fully revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is God Almighty Himself. Paul described Jesus as the express image of the invisible God. Jesus is the God of the Old Testament.We are weighing this phrase by James against the words of Jesus and the character of Jesus. <ul><li>Is faith without works dead?</li><li>Is faith alone enough?</li><li>What role do works play here?</li><li>What are works?</li><li>What is faith?</li></ul><h3>What Is Faith?</h3>The core of our belief is faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ and His mission. The central belief is faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is really that simple. Jesus explicitly stated this in John 3:16, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.Faith is the acceptance of God's grace."Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life." — John 5:24 "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."— Acts 16:31 So, this is the context of the faith that James was talking about in James 2:14–26. He was writing to Jewish believers who were scattered outside Israel (James 1:1). To support his claim, James pointed to Abraham. Therefore, we know James was talking about the same faith that Paul was talking about.<h3>What Are Works?</h3>In James 1–2, James teaches that genuine faith is demonstrated through practical obedience and love rather than mere words. He points to actions such as persevering through trials (1:12), resisting temptation (1:13–15), controlling anger (1:19–20) and the tongue (1:26), obeying God's Word (1:22–25), caring for orphans and widows (1:27), and remaining morally pure (1:27).He also emphasizes rejecting favoritism toward the rich (2:1–4), loving one's neighbor (2:8), showing mercy (2:13), and meeting the physical needs of the hungry and poorly clothed (2:15–16).Works, as explained by James, are what we do to prove our faith according to Him.<h3>Is Faith Without Works Dead?</h3>This teaching by James seems simple and reasonable when evaluated on the surface. What could be wrong with encouraging people to do good works in society?However, in the context of faith and salvation, this statement appears to be the complete opposite of the Gospel. The Gospel is the Good News of salvation. The Good News is that we are saved by grace alone. This is what separates Christianity from other religions and worldly systems. Every other religion promotes good works. There is nothing wrong with good works in themselves. It becomes a heresy when we believe that we are justified by them.<h3>Justification by Works</h3>I know what you are thinking: perhaps we are taking James out of context. Maybe James was not talking about salvation.James was actually talking about salvation. This is evident because he used Abraham as an example.21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 You see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect.23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called the Friend of God. --James 2Unfortunately, James quoted the Scriptures out of context. This event occurred when God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars and impossible to count. Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.Abraham's faith was complete when God declared him righteous. What about the Isaac's sacrifice? Abraham attempted to sacrifice his son approximately 24–40 years later. James was combining two separate events.Abraham was justified by faith alone.Paul explicitly addressed this point to show that we have nothing to boast about before God.2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.3 What does Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."— Romans 4:2–3 (NIV) Paul is directly contradicting James in that verse. James said Abraham was justified by works while Paul said he was NOT.<h3>In Conclusion</h3>The purpose of this article is not to criticize James' writing. Rather, we must read and interpret the writings of all biblical authors, both before and after the resurrection, through the lens of Jesus and His finished work.There was a tension between the concept of Grace and Works among the early church as far as 2000 years ago. This was evident in Act 15. The tension still exists today.&nbsp;We must know and hold on to the pure, undiluted Gospel. This is the meaning of worshipping God in TRUTH and SPIRIT.<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li>Grace is the character of God.</li><li>Faith is the acceptance of that Grace. Faith is believing in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.</li><li>Faith is counted as righteousness by God and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Not works) for once. Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent."— John 6:28–29The work that God requires is Faith in Jesus. The Gospel is not Faith plus works. The Gospel is Faith in Jesus Christ. Faith is not perfected by works. Faith is independent of works. &nbsp;

James vs. Paul: Who Got Abraham Right?

God communicates the same message throughout Scripture using different methods—through prophecy, events, symbols, and pictures. Some are loud and obvious, like direct prophecies that point to Jesus. Others are more subtle, woven into the narrative, easy to miss if we rush through the text.One of those quieter pictures begins in the garden.📖 Genesis 2:15 (NIV) “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” One of Adam’s primary assignments was to tend the garden. To “work” it carries the idea of cultivating, serving, and laboring. To “keep” it means to guard, watch over, and protect.<figure id="figure-fg4kmv7ajgmoqgg3ev"><img id="fg4kmv7ajgmoqgg3ev" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1emBee5oWZYmfRspj0jOhSearDj5Q2uoP3JIYggtLpV40k0XIeMaSEDebFyeIl2p.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1emBee5oWZYmfRspj0jOhSearDj5Q2uoP3JIYggtLpV40k0XIeMaSEDebFyeIl2p.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>These are the essential responsibilities of a gardener.A few verses later, we see another layer of responsibility given to Adam:📖 Genesis 2:19–20 “The Lord God formed every beast… and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them…”God did the creative work—He made everything. Yet He chose to involve Adam in the process by giving him the authority to name the animals. Not because God lacked ability, but because He is relational and inclusive in how He governs.We see this same pattern later when God engages Abraham before the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. God invites participation.But we also know how the story unfolds. Adam and Eve were deceived, and the responsibility entrusted to them was not upheld. The garden was lost.<h3>THE NEW GARDENER</h3>After the resurrection, there is a subtle but striking moment:📖 John 20:14–16 (NIV) Mary Magdalene turned and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him…” <figure id="figure-fpp01u0yrcmoqgpqs2"><img id="fpp01u0yrcmoqgpqs2" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bTBFGL7kbbbj6iM72YPZm6Q3SCOs2pebqJSw5A4CkvqD7c3WFBKdK89yW4VwSzA.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bTBFGL7kbbbj6iM72YPZm6Q3SCOs2pebqJSw5A4CkvqD7c3WFBKdK89yW4VwSzA.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure>Scripture does not say that Jesus intentionally appeared as a gardener. But it’s hard to ignore the echo. Jesus most likely appeared as a gardner because she looked at Him and did not recognized Him.&nbsp;The first Adam was placed in a garden and given the responsibility to tend it. Now, after the resurrection, the risen Christ stands in a garden—and is mistaken for a gardener.At the very least, the imagery invites us to look deeper.<h3>JESUS AND ADAM</h3>The New Testament presents Jesus as the “last Adam,” drawing a deliberate contrast between the first man and Christ.Through Adam’s disobedience in the garden, sin and death entered the world, affecting all humanity. But through Jesus’ obedience, righteousness and life are made available to all.As Paul explains:📖 Romans 5:19 “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”Adam represents the beginning of fallen humanity—formed from the dust, yet failing under temptation. Jesus, though fully human, stands as the faithful one who overcomes where Adam did not.This contrast reaches its clearest expression here:📖 1 Corinthians 15:22, 45 “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” “The last Adam, a life-giving spirit.” Adam brought death into human experience. Christ inaugurates a new creation—restoring life and communion with God. Where Adam’s act led to separation, Jesus’ obedience—even to the point of death—ushers in reconciliation. He is not just a parallel to Adam, but the fulfillment of what humanity was always meant to be.<h3>THE GARDEN AND THE SOUL </h3><figure id="figure-0y1t81oj9qmoqgw5we"><img id="0y1t81oj9qmoqgw5we" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/35ib0owLN2DXJDR6nfBhq554ZT4cJvU2yn98eN55gcPchHLWsFs3DuH8YikaXDnT.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="null" data-positiony="null" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/35ib0owLN2DXJDR6nfBhq554ZT4cJvU2yn98eN55gcPchHLWsFs3DuH8YikaXDnT.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>But it goes even deeper.Adam was placed in a garden to cultivate, guard, and sustain it—and he failed. What Adam could not uphold, Christ now restores and fulfills.📖 Genesis 2:15 “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” That same language—cultivate, guard, watch over—points beyond a physical garden.Throughout Scripture, the condition of the human heart is often described in agricultural terms. Jesus Himself speaks of the heart as soil:📖 Matthew 13:23 “The seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it…” The garden, then, becomes a picture of the inner life—the soul. And this is where the work of Christ becomes deeply personal. He is the true source of life—the one who cultivates, prunes, sustains, and restores. What Adam lost externally, Christ restores internally.<ul><li>He removes what does not belong (Weed).</li><li>He nurtures what brings life.</li><li>He watches over and preserves.</li><li>He Prunes</li><li>He Sustains</li><li>He Restores</li></ul><h3>GRACE: THE RESTORED ORDER </h3>This is grace.It is not about striving to produce life on our own. It is about receiving life from the One who gives it. Christ does not merely give instructions—He becomes the source. He does not simply command growth—He produces it.Our role is not to manufacture transformation, but to remain in Him.To trust. To receive. To believe in His finished work.Because in the end, the restoration of the garden was never going to come through Adam’s effort—but through Christ.

From Eden to Resurrection: The Work of the Gardener

It was to be eaten in readiness for departure, with no leftovers remaining until morning (Exodus 12:10–11). This event was established as a lasting ordinance, to be kept annually along with the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days, during which no leaven was to be found in their homes (Exodus 12:14–20), and parents were to explain its meaning to future generations (Exodus 12:26–27).<h3>The Four Passover Cups</h3><figure id="figure-s6tdnriafnmnl6vff3"><img id="s6tdnriafnmnl6vff3" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/32Ha3rEf4GzDdlR7sx3IVp7eO9qohq6LtTozlC4ecjvcl1M90AcQelhAPREJplLc.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/32Ha3rEf4GzDdlR7sx3IVp7eO9qohq6LtTozlC4ecjvcl1M90AcQelhAPREJplLc.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>There were four specific promises (bolded below) that Jesus gave the Israelite that He would fulfill in Exodus 6:6–7. Exodus 6:6–7 (ESV): “Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.’”In later Jewish practice, each family drinks four cups of wine during the Passover feast to signify these four promises of God. The four cups are spaced throughout the evening in a set order that follows the flow of the Seder (a Passover Seder is a structured, 15-step interactive meal observed on the first one or two nights of Passover, designed to recount and relive the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt).1. First Cup – Sanctification (Kiddush) This is drunk at the start of the meal. A blessing is recited over the wine to set the meal apart as holy, marking the beginning of Passover. This cup represents sanctification—being set apart as holy. The New Testament teaches that we are sanctified by Jesus through the Holy Spirit:&nbsp;1 Corinthians 6:11 — “But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”2. Second Cup – Deliverance (Maggid) After the opening rituals, the story of the Exodus is retold (fulfilling Exodus 13:8—“you shall tell your son…”). When this section is completed, the second cup of wine is drunk. Scripture shows that Jesus delivers us:John 8:36 — “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 12:47 — “I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.” Luke 4:18 — “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight for the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”&nbsp;Jesus fulfilled this.&nbsp;3. Third Cup – Redemption (Birkat Hamazon) After the main meal is eaten (which included the lamb in biblical times, along with unleavened bread per Exodus 12:8), prayers of thanksgiving are said, and then the third cup of wine is taken. This is the cup of the redemption.&nbsp;Jesus has redeemed us. Redemption means that a price was paid to restore what was lost. This pattern is seen in the story of Hosea, where the husband redeems his unfaithful wife. In the same way, Jesus paid the price to redeem us:Isaiah 44:22 — “I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” Isaiah 43:1 — “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”&nbsp;4. Fourth Cup – Praise (Hallel) The evening concludes with songs of praise (traditionally Psalms 113–118), and then the fourth cup is drunk to complete the Seder.&nbsp; As we consistently emphasize, the Old Testament laws and prophets all speak and point to Jesus. Jesus is the ONLY interpretation of the Old Testament commandments and prophecies.<h3>The Last and Final Passover</h3><figure id="figure-2lbomu9z4gmnl696hm"><img id="2lbomu9z4gmnl696hm" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1dSzF50W1Z6er4lXh8C9dTfTiENMjBGNZtmjpXH4KR6cxGndRzb8RKsEIGRoYcEb.png" alt="a group of people dancing" title="a group of people dancing" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1dSzF50W1Z6er4lXh8C9dTfTiENMjBGNZtmjpXH4KR6cxGndRzb8RKsEIGRoYcEb.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure>There are many details in this event that point directly to Jesus and His mission.&nbsp;Luke 22:17–20 (ESV): “17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, ‘Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’ 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.’”The book of Luke gives us enough detail to trace where Jesus is within the Passover structure.From the established order of the Seder:Cup 1 (start) → storytelling → Cup 2 → meal → Cup 3 → praise → Cup 4Step 1: A cup before the meal (Luke 22:17) “And he took a cup…” This cup is taken before the bread, which places it before the meal. This aligns with the earlier portion of the Passover structure, specifically the second cup (Cup of Deliverance), which is associated with the retelling of the Exodus. They must have drank the first cup.&nbsp;Step 2: The bread and meal (Luke 22:19) “And he took bread…” This corresponds to the meal itself within the Passover.Step 3: The cup after the meal (Luke 22:20) “And likewise the cup after they had eaten…” This is explicit. This cup is taken after the meal, which directly aligns with the third cup (Cup of Redemption) in the Passover order. This is not assumed—Luke clearly anchors this cup after the meal, placing it in the position of the third cup.And it is this third cup that He identifies as: “the new covenant in my blood” This is critical. The cup that represents redemption is the one Jesus assigns to His blood. This directly connects His sacrifice to redemption—payment, restoration, and covenant. He redeemed us by shedding His Blood for us.&nbsp;Ephesians 1:7 — “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”&nbsp;The Missing Fourth Cup After this moment, the Gospel account moves away from the meal. The fourth cup—the cup of praise—is not explicitly mentioned during the Last Supper.Instead, Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives, where He prays and is later arrested.This creates a gap in the Passover sequence.&nbsp;John provides insight into the completion of this moment:John 19:28–30 (ESV): “28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”After completing His earthly mission, just before giving up His spirit, Jesus asked for a drink. John explicitly tells us this was done in fulfillment of Scripture (v. 28).This suggests that the final cup—the cup of praise—may be connected to this moment. The sour wine offered to Him was still wine, and upon receiving it, He declared, “It is finished.”This aligns with the completion of the four promises in Exodus 6:6–7. The final promise—“I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God”—is now fulfilled.<ol style="list-style-type: lower-roman;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: lower-roman;"><li>I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, (Sanctification)</li><li> I will deliver you from slavery to them, (Deliverance)</li><li>I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. (Redemption)</li><li>I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God…’” (Intimacy Restoration)</li></ol>“It is finished.” &nbsp; I pray that you see and receive this powerful revelation of what Jesus has done for us and embrace the rest He has provided.Happy Easter.&nbsp;

The Missing Cup: How Jesus Finished the Passover on the Cross

In the last piece, we explored Moses striking the rock twice. We explained that the rock was a type and shadow pointing directly to Jesus Christ. The rock was to be struck once, and Moses did that. This signified that Jesus would die once to pay the debt for our sins.On the second occasion, however, God instructed Moses to speak to the rock. When Moses disobeyed and struck it again, God counted it as unbelief. The natural consequence of unbelief is a lack of intimacy with God. This is why Moses was not permitted to lead the people into the Promised Land. The Promised Land ultimately points to a place of rest and intimacy with God.But there is another part of this story we did not explore—the water.<h3>&nbsp;What Does the Water Represent?</h3> Throughout Scripture, we see a consistent pattern: living water represents the Holy Spirit.So when we revisit the story of Moses prophetically, the deeper meaning becomes clearer. The physical thirst of the Israelites points to a deeper spiritual reality—a longing for the life of God.The rock is the source of the water for God’s people. It is through Jesus Christ that we encounter the Holy Spirit.God revealed this connection both in the Old and New Testaments:Isaiah 44:3 “I will pour water on the thirsty land… I will pour My Spirit upon your offspring…” The first time the Israelites asked for water, the rock was struck. This points to the death of Christ—the moment through which life would be made available.John 20:22 “And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” &nbsp;<h3>The Gospel and the Spirit</h3>The second time the people needed water, Moses was instructed to speak.Speak what exactly? The Gospel.The Holy Spirit Himself is the power of God at work in the Gospel. The power of the Gospel is not abstract—it is the Holy Spirit Himself working through it. As it is written:“The gospel… is the power of God for salvation” (Romans 1:16) “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8)This shows that the power within the Gospel is the Holy Spirit Himself. He is the One who brings it to life, who illuminates the truth, and who causes it to take root in the hearts of those who believe. He activates the Word, making it more than information—it becomes a living encounter with God. He is the One who quenches our spiritual thirst.This is why, even as the Gospel is being preached, the Spirit moves:“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word” (Acts 10:44) Paul confirms the same pattern:“In demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (1 Corinthians 2:4–5) “Received the Spirit… by hearing with faith” (Galatians 3:2)The Holy Spirit is not separate from the Gospel’s power—He is its power.<h3>&nbsp;The Pattern of Salvation</h3><figure id="figure-shi87cobumnd6r4eg"><img id="shi87cobumnd6r4eg" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/17vFjcjGfj8xoP46meH9WEhs1SgodB3c3teDjMkmvjSHpIIpePmDs1BNxfRFOxrK.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionX="undefined" data-positionY="undefined" data-fullWidth="false"/></figure>When we return to Moses, the picture becomes complete.After the rock was struck once, Moses’ role was simply to speak. It was marked by joy, gratitude, and dependence on God.By the time of Jesus, an additional ritual had become part of the celebration—a water-pouring ceremony known as Simchat Beit Hashoavah, the Festival of Water Drawing. Priests would draw water from the Pool of Siloam, carry it to the temple with the sound of the shofar, and pour it out at the altar along with wine. This ceremony marked the beginning of earnest prayers for rain and was filled with great rejoicing.It was in this exact moment that Jesus stood and declared:“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” When Jesus said this, the Jewish leaders and the people present knew that He was calling Himself God. He was revealing that what the ritual symbolized—living water—would be fulfilled in Him through the Holy Spirit.The Feast of Tabernacles was always about Jesus and His mission, just like all the elements of the Law of Moses.Jesus was also directly echoing the invitation found in:Isaiah 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…” &nbsp;<h3>The Same Message Throughout Scripture</h3>God has communicated the same message throughout Scripture—from creation, to the Law of Moses, to the Prophets.The message is this: God Himself would come in human form to save the people He loves (John 3:16). He paid the price for our salvation. And now, the power of that salvation is carried out through the Person of the Holy Spirit.The Holy Spirit is the One who saves, cleanses, sanctifies, and transforms. It is not by might, nor by power. Zech 4:6This same message is expressed in water baptism—a visible sign of an inward reality. We wrote about this <a data-mce-href="https://christuncensored.net/blog/-from-mikveh-to-messiah--why-water-baptism-was-only-a-shadow" href="https://christuncensored.net/blog/-from-mikveh-to-messiah--why-water-baptism-was-only-a-shadow">here&nbsp;</a>And it is the same message seen in the story of Moses:<ul><li>God’s people are thirsty on their journey</li><li>God points them to the Rock (Jesus)</li><li>The Rock gives living water (the Holy Spirit)</li><li>The Spirit quenches their thirst and gives life</li></ul>As Jesus said:“Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst… it will become in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14) And as Paul affirms:“You were washed… sanctified… justified… by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11)The message is crystal clear in one of the last verses in the whole Bible.Revelation 22:17 (ESV) “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”The bride (the church) speak and the Holy Spirit is the power of the Gospel. Salvation is Free. Because Jesus paid the Price.&nbsp;

From the Rock to the River: The Meaning of Sukkot

One of the most interesting—and perhaps mind-boggling—decisions God made in the Old Testament was His decision not to allow Moses to enter the Promised Land. At first glance, this decision seems extremely harsh. After all, this is the same Moses whom God used to perform mighty works. This is the same Moses who pleaded with God several times on behalf of the very Israelites who constantly complained.So why, in what appears to be a moment of weakness on Moses’ part, would God make such a severe decision and deny him entry into the Promised Land? Where is the God of grace in this story?The miracle of water coming from a rock occurred twice in the Old Testament.The first time happened at Rephidim early in Israel’s journey after leaving Egypt. The people complained to Moses because there was no water. God instructed Moses to go to a rock at Horeb with the elders of Israel and strike the rock with his staff. When Moses did this, water flowed out for the people to drink. The place was called Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and tested whether God was truly among them (Exodus 17:1–7).<figure id="figure-u55uknrgefmmqtkxkm"><img id="u55uknrgefmmqtkxkm" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/2rnVxK5EWrgiI0U1eF1G0OlvW3F6urfVtXA2WQWapad3nf66UCSquSrLLBrN5nyC.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/2rnVxK5EWrgiI0U1eF1G0OlvW3F6urfVtXA2WQWapad3nf66UCSquSrLLBrN5nyC.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>The second time water came from a rock happened at Kadesh in the Desert of Zin during Israel’s wilderness journey. When the people again complained about having no water, God told Moses to speak to the rock so that it would produce water. Frustrated with the people, Moses instead struck the rock twice with his staff, and water still came out for everyone to drink. However, because Moses did not follow God’s instruction and failed to honor Him before the people, God told Moses and Aaron that they would not enter the Promised Land. The place was again called Meribah, meaning “quarreling” (Numbers 20:1–13).<h3>So why did God punish Moses?</h3>To fully understand any story in the Bible, two important principles must be considered.<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li>First, the ultimate context of Scripture is Jesus. Of course, there are many lessons throughout the Bible, but the central message of Scripture is Jesus Christ and His mission to redeem humanity.</li><li>Second, the Old Testament contains types and shadows that point to a greater spiritual reality. As Colossians 2:16–17 explains:“Therefore let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is Christ.”</li></ul></li></ul>The rock in both instances is a type and shadow of Jesus Christ. The New Testament explicitly confirms this.1 Corinthians 10:4 says: "They all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”The revelation of God as the Rock appears throughout the Old Testament.From Moses: Deuteronomy 32:4 — “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.”From David: Psalm 18:2 — “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.”From Isaiah: Isaiah 26:4 — “Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.”Hopefully by now you can see the connection.<h3>The Promised Land </h3>The Promised Land in the Old Testament is also a type and shadow of the true rest found in Christ. This rest ultimately points to Zion—not merely a physical place, but a spiritual reality.The author of Hebrews explains this clearly:Hebrews 4:8–9“For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.”The true rest occurs at salvation. It is not rest from work or from earning a living. It is rest from trying to earn anything from God. It is rest from works in the sense of trying to earn salvation, redemption, or intimacy with our Creator. God’s instruction in the first instance was very specific.Exodus 17:6 “Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.”The prophet Isaiah later alluded to this suffering Messiah:Isaiah 53:5 “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”Jesus was to die once.Hebrews 7:27 “He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.”Hebrews 10:10 “We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”In the second instance, God’s instruction was different. Moses was told to speak to the rock.Numbers 20:8 “Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water.”The rock had already been struck once, which prophetically pointed to the death of Christ. After that, everything is received by faith.When Moses struck the rock the second time, he disrupted that prophetic picture. It became an act of unbelief.Numbers 20:12 explains the issue clearly:&nbsp;“Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”Moses’ offense was not merely that he physically struck the rock. According to God, the deeper issue was that he did not trust God enough to honor Him as holy. He did not trust the fact that the rock has been struck once and for all. It is finished (John 19:30). All Moses needed to do was just to SPEAK.ConclusionThis is what we have covered;<ol><li>Jesus Is The Rock .</li><li>The promise land is our place of rest that we entered at Salvation.&nbsp;</li><li>Moses' did not enter the "place of rest" because of unbelief in the Finished work.</li></ol>We honor God and become intimate with God ONLY by placing our faith in the finished work of Christ—the Rock that was struck once. This is not earned by anything that we do. It is not earned by giving offering. It is not earned by righteous anger, which moses had. It is not earned by seemingly praying long hours. It is not earned by our false sense of morality. Jesus did ALL the work needed to enter the place of rest and regain intimacy with Him.
