It was to be eaten in readiness for departure, with no leftovers remaining until morning (Exodus 12:10–11). This event was established as a lasting ordinance, to be kept annually along with the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days, during which no leaven was to be found in their homes (Exodus 12:14–20), and parents were to explain its meaning to future generations (Exodus 12:26–27).<h3>The Four Passover Cups</h3><figure id="figure-s6tdnriafnmnl6vff3"><img id="s6tdnriafnmnl6vff3" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/32Ha3rEf4GzDdlR7sx3IVp7eO9qohq6LtTozlC4ecjvcl1M90AcQelhAPREJplLc.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/32Ha3rEf4GzDdlR7sx3IVp7eO9qohq6LtTozlC4ecjvcl1M90AcQelhAPREJplLc.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>There were four specific promises (bolded below) that Jesus gave the Israelite that He would fulfill in Exodus 6:6–7. Exodus 6:6–7 (ESV): “Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.’”In later Jewish practice, each family drinks four cups of wine during the Passover feast to signify these four promises of God. The four cups are spaced throughout the evening in a set order that follows the flow of the Seder (a Passover Seder is a structured, 15-step interactive meal observed on the first one or two nights of Passover, designed to recount and relive the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt).1. First Cup – Sanctification (Kiddush) This is drunk at the start of the meal. A blessing is recited over the wine to set the meal apart as holy, marking the beginning of Passover. This cup represents sanctification—being set apart as holy. The New Testament teaches that we are sanctified by Jesus through the Holy Spirit:&nbsp;1 Corinthians 6:11 — “But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”2. Second Cup – Deliverance (Maggid) After the opening rituals, the story of the Exodus is retold (fulfilling Exodus 13:8—“you shall tell your son…”). When this section is completed, the second cup of wine is drunk. Scripture shows that Jesus delivers us:John 8:36 — “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 12:47 — “I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.” Luke 4:18 — “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight for the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.”&nbsp;Jesus fulfilled this.&nbsp;3. Third Cup – Redemption (Birkat Hamazon) After the main meal is eaten (which included the lamb in biblical times, along with unleavened bread per Exodus 12:8), prayers of thanksgiving are said, and then the third cup of wine is taken. This is the cup of the redemption.&nbsp;Jesus has redeemed us. Redemption means that a price was paid to restore what was lost. This pattern is seen in the story of Hosea, where the husband redeems his unfaithful wife. In the same way, Jesus paid the price to redeem us:Isaiah 44:22 — “I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” Isaiah 43:1 — “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”&nbsp;4. Fourth Cup – Praise (Hallel) The evening concludes with songs of praise (traditionally Psalms 113–118), and then the fourth cup is drunk to complete the Seder.&nbsp; As we consistently emphasize, the Old Testament laws and prophets all speak and point to Jesus. Jesus is the ONLY interpretation of the Old Testament commandments and prophecies.<h3>The Last and Final Passover</h3><figure id="figure-2lbomu9z4gmnl696hm"><img id="2lbomu9z4gmnl696hm" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1dSzF50W1Z6er4lXh8C9dTfTiENMjBGNZtmjpXH4KR6cxGndRzb8RKsEIGRoYcEb.png" alt="a group of people dancing" title="a group of people dancing" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/1dSzF50W1Z6er4lXh8C9dTfTiENMjBGNZtmjpXH4KR6cxGndRzb8RKsEIGRoYcEb.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure>There are many details in this event that point directly to Jesus and His mission.&nbsp;Luke 22:17–20 (ESV): “17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, ‘Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’ 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.’”The book of Luke gives us enough detail to trace where Jesus is within the Passover structure.From the established order of the Seder:Cup 1 (start) → storytelling → Cup 2 → meal → Cup 3 → praise → Cup 4Step 1: A cup before the meal (Luke 22:17) “And he took a cup…” This cup is taken before the bread, which places it before the meal. This aligns with the earlier portion of the Passover structure, specifically the second cup (Cup of Deliverance), which is associated with the retelling of the Exodus. They must have drank the first cup.&nbsp;Step 2: The bread and meal (Luke 22:19) “And he took bread…” This corresponds to the meal itself within the Passover.Step 3: The cup after the meal (Luke 22:20) “And likewise the cup after they had eaten…” This is explicit. This cup is taken after the meal, which directly aligns with the third cup (Cup of Redemption) in the Passover order. This is not assumed—Luke clearly anchors this cup after the meal, placing it in the position of the third cup.And it is this third cup that He identifies as: “the new covenant in my blood” This is critical. The cup that represents redemption is the one Jesus assigns to His blood. This directly connects His sacrifice to redemption—payment, restoration, and covenant. He redeemed us by shedding His Blood for us.&nbsp;Ephesians 1:7 — “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”&nbsp;The Missing Fourth Cup After this moment, the Gospel account moves away from the meal. The fourth cup—the cup of praise—is not explicitly mentioned during the Last Supper.Instead, Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives, where He prays and is later arrested.This creates a gap in the Passover sequence.&nbsp;John provides insight into the completion of this moment:John 19:28–30 (ESV): “28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”After completing His earthly mission, just before giving up His spirit, Jesus asked for a drink. John explicitly tells us this was done in fulfillment of Scripture (v. 28).This suggests that the final cup—the cup of praise—may be connected to this moment. The sour wine offered to Him was still wine, and upon receiving it, He declared, “It is finished.”This aligns with the completion of the four promises in Exodus 6:6–7. The final promise—“I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God”—is now fulfilled.<ol style="list-style-type: lower-roman;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: lower-roman;"><li>I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, (Sanctification)</li><li> I will deliver you from slavery to them, (Deliverance)</li><li>I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. (Redemption)</li><li>I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God…’” (Intimacy Restoration)</li></ol>“It is finished.” &nbsp; I pray that you see and receive this powerful revelation of what Jesus has done for us and embrace the rest He has provided.Happy Easter.&nbsp;

The Missing Cup: How Jesus Finished the Passover on the Cross

In the last piece, we explored Moses striking the rock twice. We explained that the rock was a type and shadow pointing directly to Jesus Christ. The rock was to be struck once, and Moses did that. This signified that Jesus would die once to pay the debt for our sins.On the second occasion, however, God instructed Moses to speak to the rock. When Moses disobeyed and struck it again, God counted it as unbelief. The natural consequence of unbelief is a lack of intimacy with God. This is why Moses was not permitted to lead the people into the Promised Land. The Promised Land ultimately points to a place of rest and intimacy with God.But there is another part of this story we did not explore—the water.<h3>&nbsp;What Does the Water Represent?</h3> Throughout Scripture, we see a consistent pattern: living water represents the Holy Spirit.So when we revisit the story of Moses prophetically, the deeper meaning becomes clearer. The physical thirst of the Israelites points to a deeper spiritual reality—a longing for the life of God.The rock is the source of the water for God’s people. It is through Jesus Christ that we encounter the Holy Spirit.God revealed this connection both in the Old and New Testaments:Isaiah 44:3 “I will pour water on the thirsty land… I will pour My Spirit upon your offspring…” The first time the Israelites asked for water, the rock was struck. This points to the death of Christ—the moment through which life would be made available.John 20:22 “And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” &nbsp;<h3>The Gospel and the Spirit</h3>The second time the people needed water, Moses was instructed to speak.Speak what exactly? The Gospel.The Holy Spirit Himself is the power of God at work in the Gospel. The power of the Gospel is not abstract—it is the Holy Spirit Himself working through it. As it is written:“The gospel… is the power of God for salvation” (Romans 1:16) “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8)This shows that the power within the Gospel is the Holy Spirit Himself. He is the One who brings it to life, who illuminates the truth, and who causes it to take root in the hearts of those who believe. He activates the Word, making it more than information—it becomes a living encounter with God. He is the One who quenches our spiritual thirst.This is why, even as the Gospel is being preached, the Spirit moves:“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word” (Acts 10:44) Paul confirms the same pattern:“In demonstration of the Spirit and of power” (1 Corinthians 2:4–5) “Received the Spirit… by hearing with faith” (Galatians 3:2)The Holy Spirit is not separate from the Gospel’s power—He is its power.<h3>&nbsp;The Pattern of Salvation</h3><figure id="figure-shi87cobumnd6r4eg"><img id="shi87cobumnd6r4eg" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/17vFjcjGfj8xoP46meH9WEhs1SgodB3c3teDjMkmvjSHpIIpePmDs1BNxfRFOxrK.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionX="undefined" data-positionY="undefined" data-fullWidth="false"/></figure>When we return to Moses, the picture becomes complete.After the rock was struck once, Moses’ role was simply to speak. In other words, it is the proclamation of the Word—the Gospel of Jesus Christ—that releases the living water.This story reveals the pattern of salvation:<ul><li>Christ was struck once</li><li>The Gospel is proclaimed</li><li>The Holy Spirit brings life</li></ul><h3>The Law and the Feast of Tabernacles</h3>Jesus directly addressed this during the Feast of Tabernacles.John 7:37–39 “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink… rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (By this He meant the Spirit…)<figure id="figure-219w1092wtmnd4wjkw"><img id="219w1092wtmnd4wjkw" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/36mVQmYuLHNZk5WNcLKeET8DjsuBuWKAylx39wkZYwzIp4JdUCZ5g4nT0ZUj7v8D.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/36mVQmYuLHNZk5WNcLKeET8DjsuBuWKAylx39wkZYwzIp4JdUCZ5g4nT0ZUj7v8D.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>The Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) was a seven-day celebration commanded by God, where Israel lived in temporary shelters to remember His provision in the wilderness and to rejoice at the final harvest (Leviticus 23:33–43; Deuteronomy 16:13–15). It was marked by joy, gratitude, and dependence on God.By the time of Jesus, an additional ritual had become part of the celebration—a water-pouring ceremony known as Simchat Beit Hashoavah, the Festival of Water Drawing. Priests would draw water from the Pool of Siloam, carry it to the temple with the sound of the shofar, and pour it out at the altar along with wine. This ceremony marked the beginning of earnest prayers for rain and was filled with great rejoicing.It was in this exact moment that Jesus stood and declared:“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” When Jesus said this, the Jewish leaders and the people present knew that He was calling Himself God. He was revealing that what the ritual symbolized—living water—would be fulfilled in Him through the Holy Spirit.The Feast of Tabernacles was always about Jesus and His mission, just like all the elements of the Law of Moses.Jesus was also directly echoing the invitation found in:Isaiah 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…” &nbsp;<h3>The Same Message Throughout Scripture</h3>God has communicated the same message throughout Scripture—from creation, to the Law of Moses, to the Prophets.The message is this: God Himself would come in human form to save the people He loves (John 3:16). He paid the price for our salvation. And now, the power of that salvation is carried out through the Person of the Holy Spirit.The Holy Spirit is the One who saves, cleanses, sanctifies, and transforms. It is not by might, nor by power. Zech 4:6This same message is expressed in water baptism—a visible sign of an inward reality. We wrote about this <a data-mce-href="https://christuncensored.net/blog/-from-mikveh-to-messiah--why-water-baptism-was-only-a-shadow" href="https://christuncensored.net/blog/-from-mikveh-to-messiah--why-water-baptism-was-only-a-shadow">here&nbsp;</a>And it is the same message seen in the story of Moses:<ul><li>God’s people are thirsty on their journey</li><li>God points them to the Rock (Jesus)</li><li>The Rock gives living water (the Holy Spirit)</li><li>The Spirit quenches their thirst and gives life</li></ul>As Jesus said:“Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst… it will become in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14) And as Paul affirms:“You were washed… sanctified… justified… by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11)The message is crystal clear in one of the last verses in the whole Bible.Revelation 22:17 (ESV) “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”The bride (the church) speak and the Holy Spirit is the power of the Gospel. Salvation is Free. Because Jesus paid the Price.&nbsp;

From the Rock to the River: The Meaning of Sukkot

One of the most interesting—and perhaps mind-boggling—decisions God made in the Old Testament was His decision not to allow Moses to enter the Promised Land. At first glance, this decision seems extremely harsh. After all, this is the same Moses whom God used to perform mighty works. This is the same Moses who pleaded with God several times on behalf of the very Israelites who constantly complained.So why, in what appears to be a moment of weakness on Moses’ part, would God make such a severe decision and deny him entry into the Promised Land? Where is the God of grace in this story?The miracle of water coming from a rock occurred twice in the Old Testament.The first time happened at Rephidim early in Israel’s journey after leaving Egypt. The people complained to Moses because there was no water. God instructed Moses to go to a rock at Horeb with the elders of Israel and strike the rock with his staff. When Moses did this, water flowed out for the people to drink. The place was called Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and tested whether God was truly among them (Exodus 17:1–7).<figure id="figure-u55uknrgefmmqtkxkm"><img id="u55uknrgefmmqtkxkm" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/2rnVxK5EWrgiI0U1eF1G0OlvW3F6urfVtXA2WQWapad3nf66UCSquSrLLBrN5nyC.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/2rnVxK5EWrgiI0U1eF1G0OlvW3F6urfVtXA2WQWapad3nf66UCSquSrLLBrN5nyC.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>The second time water came from a rock happened at Kadesh in the Desert of Zin during Israel’s wilderness journey. When the people again complained about having no water, God told Moses to speak to the rock so that it would produce water. Frustrated with the people, Moses instead struck the rock twice with his staff, and water still came out for everyone to drink. However, because Moses did not follow God’s instruction and failed to honor Him before the people, God told Moses and Aaron that they would not enter the Promised Land. The place was again called Meribah, meaning “quarreling” (Numbers 20:1–13).<h3>So why did God punish Moses?</h3>To fully understand any story in the Bible, two important principles must be considered.<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li>First, the ultimate context of Scripture is Jesus. Of course, there are many lessons throughout the Bible, but the central message of Scripture is Jesus Christ and His mission to redeem humanity.</li><li>Second, the Old Testament contains types and shadows that point to a greater spiritual reality. As Colossians 2:16–17 explains:“Therefore let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is Christ.”</li></ul></li></ul>The rock in both instances is a type and shadow of Jesus Christ. The New Testament explicitly confirms this.1 Corinthians 10:4 says: "They all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”The revelation of God as the Rock appears throughout the Old Testament.From Moses: Deuteronomy 32:4 — “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.”From David: Psalm 18:2 — “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.”From Isaiah: Isaiah 26:4 — “Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.”Hopefully by now you can see the connection.<h3>The Promised Land </h3>The Promised Land in the Old Testament is also a type and shadow of the true rest found in Christ. This rest ultimately points to Zion—not merely a physical place, but a spiritual reality.The author of Hebrews explains this clearly:Hebrews 4:8–9“For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.”The true rest occurs at salvation. It is not rest from work or from earning a living. It is rest from trying to earn anything from God. It is rest from works in the sense of trying to earn salvation, redemption, or intimacy with our Creator. This is grace.So why did God stop Moses from reaching the Promised Land?Because he struck the Rock.<h3>Why Was Moses Punished?</h3><figure id="figure-c5j161mbemmqu0knm"><img id="c5j161mbemmqu0knm" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/2fOalCiQHgtQ4eDnuupWVXCQy61FAcUu3UKeckskGcEz6lZtKUN3yIgRe0NPffMF.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/2fOalCiQHgtQ4eDnuupWVXCQy61FAcUu3UKeckskGcEz6lZtKUN3yIgRe0NPffMF.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>Moses striking the rock the first time was a prophetic event pointing to the fact that Jesus would be punished once for our sins. God’s instruction in the first instance was very specific.Exodus 17:6 “Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.”The prophet Isaiah later alluded to this suffering Messiah:Isaiah 53:5 “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”Jesus was to die once.Hebrews 7:27 “He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.”Hebrews 10:10 “We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”In the second instance, God’s instruction was different. Moses was told to speak to the rock.Numbers 20:8 “Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water.”The rock had already been struck once, which prophetically pointed to the death of Christ. After that, everything is received by faith.When Moses struck the rock the second time, he disrupted that prophetic picture. It became an act of unbelief.Numbers 20:12 explains the issue clearly:&nbsp;“Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”Moses’ offense was not merely that he physically struck the rock. According to God, the deeper issue was that he did not trust God enough to honor Him as holy. He did not trust the fact that the rock has been struck once and for all. It is finished (John 19:30). All Moses needed to do was just to SPEAK.ConclusionThis is what we have covered;<ol><li>Jesus Is The Rock .</li><li>The promise land is our place of rest that we entered at Salvation.&nbsp;</li><li>Moses' did not enter the "place of rest" because of unbelief in the Finished work.</li></ol>We honor God and become intimate with God ONLY by placing our faith in the finished work of Christ—the Rock that was struck once. This is not earned by anything that we do. It is not earned by giving offering. It is not earned by righteous anger, which moses had. It is not earned by seemingly praying long hours. It is not earned by our false sense of morality. Jesus did ALL the work needed to enter the place of rest and regain intimacy with Him. The Day Moses Broke the Prophetic Picture

One recurring phrase in the Old Testament is: “the sheep of His pasture.” <ul><li style="">Psalms 74:1, Psalms 79:13, Psalms 95:7, Psalms 100:3, Jeremiah 23:1, Ezekiel 34:31</li></ul>This phrase speaks directly about our relationship with God — or more accurately, God’s relationship with us, His creation.Psalm 100:3 (NIV); “Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”If we read the Bible merely as literature or outside of its larger narrative, we can easily draw conclusions that misrepresent who God truly is. Isolated stories may seem to portray Him as harsh, jealous, inconsistent, or easily angered.But the clearest description of God comes from God Himself. When Jesus spoke of God, He called Him Father.John 20:17 (NIV)“I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” Fatherhood is not a random title. It communicates intimacy, care, provision, protection, and belonging. No sane father delights in destroying his own child.Jesus also called us friends (John 15:15). And another powerful metaphor Scripture gives us is this: We are the sheep of His pasture.&nbsp;1. Why Sheep? Let’s be honest. With how humans think, we might have chosen “lion.” But God chose to refer to us as sheep.Sheep are deeply group-dependent animals that thrive when they stay close to their flock and often become anxious if separated. As prey creatures, they are naturally alert and quick to react to loud sounds, sudden movements, or unfamiliar handling. They remember experiences—good or bad—so harsh treatment can leave lasting fear, while steady, patient care builds confidence. Sheep respond best to calm leadership, consistent routines, and environments that respect their natural instincts, since unmanaged stress can negatively affect their health and performance.That sounds like us. We are intelligent, yes. Capable, yes. But emotionally fragile. Easily anxious. Easily scattered. Sheep need a shepherd.That’s not an insult. It is the reality of the sheep.&nbsp;4. So What Does This Mean for Us? • We belong to God. That changes how we face stress, uncertainty, and fear.Matthew 10:30 (NIV) “Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” You are not random. You are not unmanaged. You are not unseen. We have to live our life with this reality and understanding. We have access to:<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li style="">Provision</li><li style="">Protection</li><li style="">Guidance</li><li style="">Healing</li><li style="">Rest</li><li style="">Intimacy </li></ul></li></ul>The only response required is to trust Him.&nbsp;

The Sheep of His Pasture

John 9 offers a very interesting contrast between the Pharisees’ leadership approach and Jesus’ leadership approach. In summary, Jesus healed a blind man. He spat on the ground, made mud, put it on the man’s eyes, and instructed him to wash. The blind man was healed. People were amazed at this miracle, which naturally led them to ask questions about Jesus.The Pharisees, however, made an issue out of this. They said Jesus was “not of God” because He healed on the Sabbath. They questioned the validity of the miracle and sent for the parents of the blind man to verify it. The inquiry was so intense that John records the parents were afraid of the Jewish leaders.They called the blind man again and tried to manipulate him by saying, “Give glory to God by telling the truth” (verse 24). When this failed, they resorted to insulting him. They aligned themselves with Moses in contrast to Jesus, claiming that God spoke to Moses, but because Jesus was a sinner, God could not have spoken to Him. What they failed to realize was that it was the very God who spoke to Moses whom they were now opposing.The blind man pushed back against this assertion, and at that moment it became clear that the Pharisees had lost any remaining respect he had for them. They ultimately kicked him out.After he was expelled, Jesus found him and revealed Himself as “the Son of Man.” Jesus then exposed the Pharisees as spiritually blind.This story leads directly into the topic of this write-up:<h3>&nbsp;Jesus: The Door of the Sheep</h3><figure id="figure-r7zhm1l97mlctfjfy"><img id="r7zhm1l97mlctfjfy" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/29qO7zMBa4VEE4cr9NLVjc7DuxzQHACrUYWvjbCzBTlrUDbrFVgRxttTbxexGbz7.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/29qO7zMBa4VEE4cr9NLVjc7DuxzQHACrUYWvjbCzBTlrUDbrFVgRxttTbxexGbz7.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>Jesus then moved into the shepherd metaphor to draw a strong contrast between Himself and the Pharisees.To fully understand this metaphor, it helps to visualize a sheepfold.A sheepfold is a place of rest for the sheep and a place of protection.Elements of a Historical Jewish Sheepfold<ul><li>Single narrow entrance (one way in, one way out)</li><li>No physical door (the shepherd was the door)</li><li>Shepherd lying across the entrance at night</li><li>Shared fold (multiple flocks together overnight)</li><li>Individual voice recognition (sheep knew their shepherd’s voice)</li><li>Protection from thieves and predators</li><li>Morning separation (each shepherd calls out his own sheep) &nbsp; Verse 1 &amp; 2: Jesus explains that the only way into the sheepfold is through the door. Remember, the sheepfold is a place of rest and protection. Anyone who tries to enter by climbing the wall is a thief. Jesus enters through the door.</li></ul>Verse 3: The sheep know His (Jesus’) voice, and He knows the names of the sheep. He leads them.Verse 4: Not only does He lead the sheep, but He leads from the front. He personally protected the sheep from predators and thieves. Jesus was essentially saying that to reach the sheep, one must go through Him—because He Himself is positioned at the entrance.This means He is the ultimate protector of the sheep.<h2>Ezekiel 34 Connection</h2>What Jesus was saying here had already been declared in Ezekiel 34 by Him.“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel…” (Ezekiel 34:2) Sins of the Shepherds in Ezekiel 34<ul><li>They feed themselves, not the sheep</li><li>They consume the sheep’s resources</li><li>They fail to strengthen the weak</li><li>They do not heal the sick</li><li>They do not bind up the injured</li><li>They do not bring back the strays</li><li>They do not search for the lost</li><li>They rule with force and harshness</li><li>They allow the flock to be scattered</li><li>They expose the sheep to predators</li><li>They fail to restrain exploitation</li><li>They do not seek God’s sheep at all</li></ul>These characteristics are exactly what the Pharisees displayed in John 9. Jesus used this moment to show that Israel’s shepherds (the system) had failed, and that God Himself was now stepping in to shepherd His people.<h3>&nbsp;Conclusion</h3>Ezekiel 34:11–12 (NIV); “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them…”As repeatedly shown throughout Scripture, the Law and the Prophets point to Jesus. Ezekiel 34 was directly prophesying about God coming among His people to establish His own priesthood, leadership and system. Humans were never the enemy of God—we are His creation. So the issue was never the individual pharisees or prophet or Priests.&nbsp;Hebrews 13:20; “May the God of peace… bring back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep…”The contrast between the Good Shepherd and the bad shepherd is the contrast between the human system (the Law), which the Pharisees embodied, and God’s system (Grace). The Law cannot save. Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He is the One who came to save us, lead us, protect us, and provide for us. As the Door of the sheep, He guarantees our rest. He came to remove the veil beween us and God. There is no more need for Human shepherds &amp; intermediary as it was in the Old System.&nbsp;Ezekiel 34:15–16 (NIV); “I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down…”Hebrews 7:24–25; “Because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him…”&nbsp;

Jesus: The Door of the Sheep

The book of Hosea opens with one of the most unsettling commands in Scripture: “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom” (Hosea 1:2). God commands the prophet Hosea to marry Gomer, a prostitute, as a living sign of Israel’s spiritual condition. Just as Gomer would prove unfaithful to Hosea, Israel had been unfaithful to the Lord—pursuing other gods despite being bound to Him by covenant. The names of their children—Jezreel, Lo-Ruhamah (“No Mercy”), and Lo-Ammi (“Not My People”)—were prophetic declarations of coming judgment against the Northern Kingdom for its persistent idolatry and rebellion (Hosea 1:4–9).Historically, Hosea was sent by God to prophesy to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the 8th century BCE, roughly between 755–722 BCE, in the final decades before Israel’s fall to Assyria (2 Kings 17). His ministry spanned the reigns of several kings, including Jeroboam II—a time of outward prosperity but deep spiritual decay (Hosea 1:1). As the narrative unfolds, Gomer leaves Hosea for other lovers, yet God commands Hosea to pursue and redeem her: “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man” (Hosea 3:1). From the text, several things are clear about her condition:<ul><li>She was unfaithful (Hosea 2:2)</li><li>She lived in disgrace (Hosea 2:5)</li><li>She continued pursuing former lovers (Hosea 2:5)</li><li>She did not trust her husband to provide food, water, and basic needs (Hosea 2:5)</li><li>She refused to acknowledge that it was her husband who had provided for her (Hosea 2:8)</li><li>She chased after lovers who ultimately failed her (Hosea 2:7)</li></ul><figure id="figure-krdm6g9vurmkiolftx"><img id="krdm6g9vurmkiolftx" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/8ZB3Fz8a2biqChjc38oCrPZqTCdgP4thEpC6zZCEsi2esjIW8g5eaQSiPOM5cr7i.png" alt="Job Cries Out to God" title="Job Cries Out to God" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/8ZB3Fz8a2biqChjc38oCrPZqTCdgP4thEpC6zZCEsi2esjIW8g5eaQSiPOM5cr7i.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure>Despite the security and unconditional love Hosea provided, Gomer remained restless and dissatisfied. Scripture does not leave this up to interpretation—God states plainly that Israel’s condition was one of unfaithfulness.Hosea 4:1 (NIV): “There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land.”This is not the first time God refers to His people as adulterous:<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li>Jeremiah 3:20 – “As a treacherous wife leaves her husband, so you have been treacherous to Me.”</li><li>Jeremiah 3:1–3 – “You have played the whore with many lovers.”</li><li>Ezekiel 16:32 – “You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband.”&nbsp;</li></ul></li></ul><h3>Jesus Is the True Hosea Who Went to Get Gomer Back</h3>Hosea 3:1 (NIV) says: “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress.”<figure id="figure-chv5bt8da2mkiof65v"><img id="chv5bt8da2mkiof65v" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bdxYMs8U3IxsCbYVgaObr3mXUdt25p7TAu1twsssNdGmjKbU7pgFcq4zyqlUeNo.png" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-lg md:rounded-xl lg:rounded-2xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-fullwidth="false" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bdxYMs8U3IxsCbYVgaObr3mXUdt25p7TAu1twsssNdGmjKbU7pgFcq4zyqlUeNo.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure>Whether Hosea’s experience was lived literally or communicated prophetically, the message is unmistakable: God rescues an unfaithful bride.Scripture reveals that this story ultimately points to Christ.<ul><li>Jesus is our Husband</li></ul><ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul style="list-style-type: circle;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: circle;"><li>Isaiah 54:5 (NIV): “Your Maker is your husband.” </li><li>2 Corinthians 11:2 (NIV): “I promised you to one husband, to Christ.”</li></ul></li></ul><ul><li>While we (Like Gomer) were with another lovers, He loved us anyway<ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul><li style="">Romans 5:8 (NIV): “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”</li></ul></li></ul></li></ul><ul><li>Jesus paid To get us back just like Hosea paid;</li></ul><ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul style="list-style-type: circle;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: circle;"><li style="">Hosea 3:2 (NIV) “So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley.” </li><li style="">Mark 10:45 (NIV) “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”</li></ul></li></ul><ul><li style="">Jesus brought us back into intimacy just like Hosea did</li></ul><ul><li style="list-style-type: none;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: none;"><ul style="list-style-type: circle;" data-mce-style="list-style-type: circle;"><li>Hosea 3:3 (NIV) “Then I told her, ‘You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will live with you.’”</li><li>John 15:4 (NIV): “Remain in me, as I also remain in you.”</li></ul></li></ul><h3>Conclusion</h3>One of the many reasons the Bible stands as the greatest collection of books in human history is because of stories like this. How could a holy God command a prophet to marry a prostitute? The Bible is not meant to promote religious obsession or cultural fixation; it reveals God’s character through Christ.Hosea’s prophecies were not sentimental—they included real judgment. Israel was ultimately removed from the land and scattered by Assyria. But prophetically, Jesus took those judgments upon Himself.<ul><li>2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV): “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us.</li><li>Romans 3:25 (NIV): “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement.”</li></ul>That is the good news. That is grace—not condemnation.Like Gomer, all we are called to do now is believe and enter His rest.Zion, Rest, and the Restoration of IntimacyIn Scripture, restoration does not end with forgiveness alone—it ends with return. The prophets consistently describe that return as coming back to Zion, the place God chooses to dwell with His people. Zion is not merely geographic; it is relational. It represents nearness, belonging, and rest. “For the LORD has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling” (Psalm 132:13–14). After judgment, exile, and unfaithfulness, God’s goal was never distance—it was reunion.This is why Hosea’s story does not end with Gomer forgiven but living independently. She is brought back to live with her husband (Hosea 3:3). Forgiveness without intimacy would be incomplete. Likewise, in Christ, we are not merely declared righteous and left on our own—we are brought back into God’s dwelling place. The New Testament makes this explicit: “You have come to Mount Zion… to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant” (Hebrews 12:22–24). Rest is not inactivity; it is the end of striving to earn love or ANYTHING from God. Gomer rests because she is chosen. Israel is called back to Zion to rest in what Jesus did. Jesus invites the weary into the same reality: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). To believe the gospel is to stop chasing lovers that cannot satisfy and to return home—to dwell with God, to remain in Christ, and to live from intimacy rather than performance. This is the final movement of Hosea’s prophecy and the heart of the gospel: the adulterous wife restored, brought home, and invited to rest in the love of her faithful Husband.
